Improve your cholesterol and your health

A cholesterol is a sterol lipid synthesized by the liver and transported in the blood stream to the membranes of all animal cells; it plays a central role in many biochemical processes and, as a lipoprotein that coats the wall of blood vessels, its associated with cardiovascular disease.

How does cholesterol enters the body?
Cholesterol enters the body from two main sources. Your body (liver) which produces all the cholesterol you need and through animal sources such as meat, poultry, butter, cheese, egg yolks and other dairy products.Oils such as palm oil, kernel oil and coconut oil can trigger your liver to make more cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a type of lipid just as fats are, but unlike fat, cholesterol can't be exercised off, sweated out or burned for energy.

Does your body need cholesterol? Yes!
Cholesterol is not bad as your body needs it to build cells but excess of it in body can be dangerous.
There are basically two types of cholesterol
  • Low-density lipoproteins (LDL)
  • High-density lipoproteins (HDL)

The LDL stays in the blood where the cholesterol is deposited in the walls of arteries, causing atherosclerotic plaque. The more plaque that builds up, the narrower the arteries become, until eventually the blood supply to the organs is reduced. This is the bad cholesterol.
HDL carry excess cholesterol back to the liver which processes and excrete the cholesterol. This is the good one. Infact the more HDL you have, the lower your risk of developing heart disease.Too much of LDL or not enough of HDL increases the chances that cholesterol will start to slowly build up in the inner walls of arteries that feed the heart and brain.
Any diet that raises the level of cholesterol and  LDL and/or lowers HDL is bad. Any diet that lowers cholesterol and/or raises HDl is good.
Females tend to have higher HDL than men since their sex hormones releases HDL and male sex hormones lowers HDL.
